Activities & experience

Founded in 2010 by a collective of 2 artists, 2 culture managers and a curator, Pasaj is an independent art space, located in Tarlabasi, a multicultural popular neighborhood of Istanbul, open to local inhabitants as well as local and international artists.

The target audience of the activities is mostly the children of the neighborhood coming from very different cultural and social background, whose family had to face displacement inside Turkey or from other countries. A large range of the children stops going to school quite early in order to get married or start working around the age of 16.

Because of gentrification of other districts, located closed to Tarlabasi, many artists live around.

The activities of Pasaj aims to facilitate the connection between locals and artists, through art project implemented though a close collaboration with the families, artist, shop keepers…

The artistic activities are considered as a way to share the know-how of local families, and the artists but also a way to share their vision about the transformation of the neighborhood at an urbanism level, social level, professional level.

For the local children, all activities and meeting with artists are a way to allow them to increase their communication skills, learning skills, hand-craft technics, and be more familiar with contemporary art.

Activities & experience

Among a large number of projects, “61 m of Kahya bey street” has a direct connection with “Musical post card” project.

In this project implemented from 2014 to 2016, the children learned some journalism and filming technics in order to film and interview craftsmen, inhabitants or shopkeepers, and explore their vision about living and working in Tarlabasi. Their work was presented in Istanbul and Berlin.
